"They made a much bigger deal out of it, bigger than it needed to be," 31-year-old security worker Gabriel Knight said in New Orleans' nearly empty French Quarter. "I was here with Katrina. That was a nightmare. This was nothing."
Here is the problem with America!!! We want it all. A very smart decision was made to order mandatory evacuations from New Orleans and this guy is whining about it. Since you never know, what Mother Nature is going to throw at you it is paramount to do the smart thing.
From the people I have talked with at FEMA and watching the TV coverage, the local government did a much better job than with Katrina. What the media failed to emphasize was the lack of a plan at the state and local level. That is where the rubber meets the road during times of natural disasters. FEMA and the Federal government made plenty of mistakes; however, that ultimate responsibility lies at the lower levels.
Let us say a word of Thanks that there has not been more devastation due to Gustav. Let’s also keep in mind that you can’t prove a negative. If more people had not evacuated what would have happened? It is why you buy insurance. Just something to think about.
